Norm's very thin postings are a direct result of a rather long, shitty project here at the shack. It's still not fully completed, and with colder weather approaching, and many other important issues at hand, Norm has been between a rock and a wet place. It all began in late July, when Norm pulled a piece of styrofoam insulation out of his ceiling. This was prompted by quiet crunching noises. Expecting a mouse he was greeted by hundreds of carpenter ants!! A rain of ants, only to follow with weeks of buckets to catch water.

There is a local family that has a maple sugar house several miles down the road that also sells produce. Norm has never been a big fan of maple syrup, but he appreciates the work involved. It is always fun to visit, and watch them boil the sap.

And their corn is the best anywhere. Period.

It was a mixed bag for Norm. One of the more frustrating aspects of this season was the incredible amounts of rain we received. While Norm is never one to complain about rainfall, as it makes everything green and pretty, there was seldom a day where it didn't rain. (The wheelbarrow bears the results of two days worth of storms.)

Norm had to travel to a job site recently which involved a long car ride. (Over eight hours total ride time!!) But it also involved passing by Cannon Mountain, which Norm had visited as a teen. (He had driven there with a bunch of buddies to ski back in the day.) The actual lift is on the other side of the mountain. (One of the only three trams in the US.)

(Norm wanted to snap his own shot on the way home, but decided against it.)

Norm is now sitting through what has become a daily ritual here in central New England - intense thunderstorms. The weather has included humid, warm days with rotating cool fronts which produce the heavy lines of rain.

Norm has been doing his best to be social over the past couple months. Suddenly his neighborhood, which was mostly senior citizens years ago, has become an affordable place for young couples. Norm is now the veteran citizen. And while Norm originally purchased his shack in his twenties, all the new owners are older. But everyone seems excited. And there was a July 4th party, which gave a chance for everyone to socialize. Pretty wild.

In other news, Norm recently made his way up to Vermont. He isn't sure how many of you have ever been to Vermont, but it is quite beautiful and unique. Here is New England's biggest ski resort, Killington. The entire route to the base is all condos, rental, and restaurant businesses. Long drive but much fun.

Norm's posts have been far and few between, and much of that has been due to projects and the weather. Call it what you will, but owning a home really results in a myriad of emotions and situations. At times over the years, Norm has felt he was in control. But other times it has felt more like a series of marathons. Only one is never sure what the actual running distance is.

As posted earlier, Norm did have an encounter with a deer. And this resulted the loss of his transportation. And while he has been relying on the girlfriend and friends, he needs a new ride. (A new used ride.) With the cost of gas more than milk, Norm has certainly been dragging his heels in this quest. A clean SAAB 900 would be nice. And while Norm sees many on the road, finding one in good condition for under $6000 is going to be tough. (The picture posted is from some European collection!! What a beauty!!)

One of the seasonal events here in central New England is the big spring storm. Norm knows many will deny the regularity of this event, but it's more common than not. Late March/early April a thick heavy paste is dumped on everything. While there is not much snow left now, Norm snapped some great shots from a couple weeks back and wanted to share. More to come.

Norm knows it has been awhile since he has last posted. He will make more of an effort to post on a regular basis. This harsh winter has been a period of personal challenge for our crusty woodsman. He has often opted not to post, simply based upon his surly nature. But alas!! Just as the snow has begun to melt, what creature has begun to assert his fatty ass over Norm's domain? Mr. Beaver! Oh Mr. Beaver. As you swim about your claimed lair, you act like you own it. But it is Norm that pays the taxes around here. And what is with the chewing of all of Norm's vegetation?! You can take yourself up the river as far as Norm is concerned!! Hey!! Take that back!! You would rather have a fatty ass instead of having no ass?!! Now you're just being mean.

Well, Norm has finally lost his deer collision virginity. Over the years, the stories have been told. By both friends and family. And yet Norm has always brushed them-off. How can one not avoid hitting such a large animal? Well, it's easy to say now. They're fucking fast and they run in a straight line. Read on.

Driving home from helping a family member, Norm had just reached cruising speed on a dark, quiet highway. The last rays of daylight were fading, as the sun slipped below the treeline. Norm's old pick-up made the familiar roar as he pushed her up to a modest 50 m.p.h. His thoughts settled back into a gentle and even mood, as he reveled in the satisfaction of a job well done. No sooner had he begun to relax, when a large doe came springing out of the woods, across the empty oncoming lane, and directly down onto the front of Norm's vehicle. It moved like a hyper bunny, and crossed the road in a silent, but unavoidable 3 seconds. The direct impact of the ordeal produced the only audible sound of the event, with a combination low thud bump and high, tinny "chink" as the beast broke every bulb and reflector in the headlight assembly. It was a direct hit, and the deer went airborne, only to become visually lost in the ditch. Looking out the passenger window, Norm could see the animal was dead.

Norm is thinking of adding new members to his salt water tanks. Nothing major. But he is getting tired of having to scrape the glass all the time. Some snails and a few fish might brighten the scene. With marine tanks, getting the critters acclimated to the water is an involved task, and since there haven't been any new members for a couple of years, Norm is a little hesitant.

By all accounts, Norm figures most New Englanders should just hibernate until spring. It's that crazy. A typical NE winter brings in some crazy, deep snowstorms. But the pattern usually has them blowing out to sea, and we would normally get bright blue skies the next day. This winter season is different. We're talking low light, stew storms. Mixed rain/sleet/snow that goes on for days. In the past two weeks we have not had over 24 hours of sunlight. Even for Norm, it's been tough.

Norm has a mixed view on the band U2. They are indeed amazing musicians, and have produced great albums over the years. But it is difficult at times for Norm to really get into their music. One song in particular has always been a favorite: Red Hill Mining Town, from the 1987 Joshua Tree album.

When Norm built his deck, he used a clear stain to treat it. That did little to mask foot traffic and food. Here's a picture from this summer. Norm repainted it with a solid body stain.

Norm cleared his roof and driveway by hand the first year he moved into this old shack. Boy did that suck!! Blame it on youthful ignorance. By the end of that first winter, Norm was at his local hardware store. And Old Faithful was purchased. And faithful she was, as she spit tons of snow over the years. Things started to go. (She won't reverse anymore.) Being a cheap Yankee, Norm has really avoided paying anybody to repair her. He just pulls it back himself.

After our last major storm, (about 10 days ago) it wouldn't go forward. Norm felt he may be finally forced to pay someone to pick-up and service Old Faithful. Norm decided to wheel her into the kitchen and look under the hood. And with a little bit of elbow grease and luck, she was up and running by Sunday night!!

Norm has come to accept how simple acts of maintenance often morph into bigger and more elaborate projects. Once one accepts this premise, one can actually live in an old shack and retain a sense of humor. Especially this past year, where Norm was actually thinking he was getting a handle on everything. And then all sorts of thing started breaking, falling apart, etc. And then the beavers moved in.

Well Norm recently went to scrub out his shower. A common chore, as Norm likes a clean shower. It's a big one he installed years ago. But this soon evolved into stripping out the old joint sealant. He also popped the drain and removed one of those strange hair/soap creatures that seem to line the inside of pipes over time. Another quick job that turned into a couple hours.

But such is the way of this old shack.

So Norm has a long Holiday weekend, and it's going to be busy. (Although he feels like just sitting in front of the computer.) The post-Christmas mess must be tackled. Norm has bags of garbage, packing materials, cans and bottles, etc. that must be taken to the local dump. (Here in the sticks there is no local trash pick-up, unless you pay for a private service.) And then there is the fridge. The holidays left Norm many a fine meals, but the leftovers may now need to join the trash.

On a more fun note, Norm did get an iTunes gift card for Christmas. His goal is to add a series of singles to the iPod. Any suggestions?

Winter Perspective #2

So Norm hosted Christmas for the family this year. And it went well. When one has almost 20 people in your home, it can be a bit stressful. But Norm found the entire event rather enjoyable. It was the weeks leading up to the holiday that Norm found rather unenjoyable. Norm had to get the house cleaned and crowd friendly.

So they all arrived, and Norm managed to direct all the larger vehicles into the driveway. Norm had to chuckle at the irony. Here it's only his home that has the space for everyone, but everyone has these huge expensive vehicles. No wonder they can't move into a bigger house. They're driving their upgrade.

Norm mentions all of this only because of the ridiculous concept of trading your car in every three years for a new model. Norm has a tough time standing around listening about the next new vehicle his relatives are going to buy, when his ride was new about the time Duran Duran had their first hit. But hey, what can Norm say. They're family, and they can afford it.

The highlight came as everybody was preparing to leave. Depart the wilderness and drive back into consumerland. The irony was Norm had been trying to tell some of the adults about the various creatures he had seen recently. Everyone seemed to want to match Norm's story with a consumerland tale. Norm was getting frustrated, as he tried to convince everybody that the animals actually live here. (As opposed to sightings that involve animals forced to move due to home building.)

So imagine the wonderful moment when 20+ turkeys walked past the house down towards the water. Those leaving to go home wanted to see more of these birds, so Norm grabbed his camera and once outside we caught the birds crossing the water. There were still a couple of dry comments about how they're everywhere, and it's very common to see them. But Norm still thinks it was a special moment for everyone.

Norm has had some roof issues. There are a couple of sections that had been subject to big leaks. Especially after prolonged periods of heavy rain. Here is a picture of Norm's endless shed project, which had become exceptionally wet recently. On top of this problem, it was also recently concluded that Norm should host the family Christmas celebration. Again.

It would seem our surly-backwoodsman has the appropriate location to accomodate everyone. (And also the layout that would allow the kids to run about, without hindering the drinking adults.) Norm thinks this is great. Unfortunately the leak situation would prove troublesome if it actually rained.

So Norm strapped on his balls and lugged 10 gallons of roof patch, (aka:tar) up his ladder onto the roof, and went to work speading the stuff into the problem areas. It comes in 5 gal. buckets, and works nicely off a flat drywall knife. (Norm has heard of people using push brooms to move it, but he has had the best luck using hand spreaders.)

The leaks are now 99% gone.

Norm has suddenly got a serious woody for the Jeep CJ-7. These were manufactured until the mid-1980s before they were replaced by the Wrangler. If Norm could find a cheap one he would buy it!!

Norm realizes that one's home is never really finished. That's the absolute reality of owning something. It's never finished. And Norm recommends anybody considering the role of homeowner, embrace this fact.. It's work, and if you accept it, and not fight it, you might just be able to keep up with the chores. Here is a picture of Norm's apple tree, which happily drops it's fruit onto Norm's lawn. Sure it's pretty, but each year Norm has to spend a couple of hours hauling the stuff away. And there is no way to simply ignore the mess. But recently Norm has come to accept this as a really cheap workout. No gym membership required.

It's been crazy for Norm. This beaver situation has been exhausting. Here is a shot of one of their older versions of the dam they keep rebuilding, (and Norm keeps pulling it apart) across a 25 ft. span. Recently Norm just opted for a peroid of peace, and let them build it into a mighty industrial version, which had the river flooding the rock formation Norm used to sit on. After three days of heavy rain, Norm had to muster his man energy and pull it apart. All the sticks and logs were imbedded in a deep mud wall under the water, which adds to the thrill of the pointed wooden ends.

Norm has been a little slow on the posting. And it's not because there is a lack of topics. Quite the opposite. The long list of stuff to pick from just isn't that fun. Interesting? Yes. But Norm has come to the recent realization that 2007 has really tested his stodgy resolve. Repair challenges seem to appear on a monthly basis. And some amusing issues just to keep things interesting. Norm has held back on blogging about most of this stuff, just because he doesn't want to bore people with the woes of this old shack.

Here is a picture of the river, which is at it's highest level ever. And this is because a family of beavers have moved in. They first reared thier rodent heads around June. Norm has mixed emotions. Growing up in New England, there have been numerous stories about how beavers can be super destructive and really alter ecosystems. Norm is going to post a series of posts, and show what they've changed over the past three months. They really are busy creatures. For now Norm is going to let them stay.

P.S. The ripples in the water are from one of the beavers swimming on the far end.

So LA has "tagged" Norm with the burning question, "If you were left alone on a deserted island, which celebrity would you choose to spend time with?" Norm wants to mention, for the record, that this tag stuff was started by Pru. So if it all gets out of hand, we can point our collective fingers at someone. (But since LA and Pru are super hot bloggers, Norm will certainly play along.)

Norm figures nobody really wants to be stranded on an island with a celeb. Why? Because they're super needy, have no survivor skills, and will certainly eat and drink all the food and water behind your back. And Norm wants to remind everyone that the Botox, hair styles, and hot outfits will last only about one weekend on a deserted tropical island. Chances are, if you're stuck on an island with a celebrity, you're going to wish you had Tucksworth around. Norm figures at least he can climb up a tree and grab the coconuts.

Okay. Back to the question. Norm would pick Liz Phair. Reasons? She would want to survive. She's hot. And it would seem she would try and help Norm build a shelter. And maybe she would grab Norm's coconuts.

Ahhhhh, old faithful. Norm's embattered gas grill. While visiting some local friends, it became obvious to Norm that he has the oldest grill around. Most of the cool crowd has eleborate, stainless steel models that can cook an entire slab of beef. Norm's model has two modes of operation. On. And off.

Well Norm finally conquered one of his most profound culinary fears. The potato salad. Why is this such a problem? Much of Norm's confusion can be with the cooking of the spuds. He has never been very good at it. The mighty potato is a far more sensitive item than most would suspect. It is not difficult to ruin our cherished tubers. Too much heat, too fast, will lessen the flavor.

But Norm is happy his first batch was a hit. Final formula used only half a cup of mayo. And crumbled bacon and sun dried tomatoes really pushed it over the top.

This little fellow has been hangin' around Norm's yard a little more than normal. Usually cardinals are a fleeting visitor. They're not like robins which hunt all day in full view. Norm saw this one's lover, as he did the funky chicken for her. He hopped towards her, reversing his position with each hop. It was a rare mating ritual moment. Norm thinks they've built a pad nearby and are raising a family.

Norm loves trucks. Especially GMC or Chevy vehicles. Many of Norm's earlier jobs required he drive a pick-up and he was always amazed at how well they performed. Of course they're not a reasonable vehicle for an urban resident or long commuter. But for anybody that works a trade for a living, they're a must. Norm has been looking for a used truck for a long time. They're very rare around these parts, as everybody needs one. And the ones that are within Norm's price range are usually pretty rusted. But Norm recently got a lead on a used GMC long bed that he may be able to afford!! (The photo shows the 2007 GMC Sierra.)

Well, one of the results of Norm's water system being replaced was the availibilty of the old pressure tank. (Behold it in it's rusted beauty.) And being the surly cheapster he is, Norm devised an inexpensive seasonal water heating system. (Put the old tank in the greenhouse.) So Norm now has this tank connnected to his washer, and will be running hot water loads courtesy of the sun. (A major star in Norm's book.)

Norm hasn't been able to actually test the hook-up, due to the rain and cool weather. But when the sun is out, that corner easily heats to 100 degrees, if not more. Norm will report the results.

Norm continues with the shed rennovation, although he feels like he may be losing stream. Recently Norm's antique water pump and tank went. They were original items that came with the shack, and were at least twenty years old, if not closer to 30. The pump's shut-off had failed, so it would keep running and running, even after the pipe pressure had obtained the required 30 psi. Fortunately a friend called her dad, and he replaced the whole system, including labor for under $1000!! That's unheard of, even around here!!

And now the pressure is closer to 50 psi, so Norm really shouldn't be bitching. But during his annual furnace cleaning, the tech announces to Norm that one of the legs on his 250 gallon oil tank is rusted and the entire tank must be replaced!! What really frustrates Norm is that he can't do these jobs himself. And they cost big bucks. At least to Norm they do. Oh well.

This is Norm's dining room. It's in a room that is 180? years old. It was not long ago that Norm had a T.V. and a bunch of used furniture in there. The dining room set is a family collection that was passed around until Norm let them store it in his barn three years ago. It is from the 1920s. Legend has it survived a fire and flood. Is Norm buying it? He doesn't know. All Norm knows is he has been hosting a bunch of family events here. (And it's been fun!)

Norm snapped this shot a few days after all the torrential rain he got last month. It was pretty strange stepping down into the washed out road. Norm heard dump trucks about a week after the flood, and sure enough the road had been repaired.

Norm has a decent variety of flowers that were planted by the previous owners. Things have been very summeresque here and Norm's yard has been showing signs of color.

Norm's Feeling Green

In honor of Earth Day, Norm has compiled a list of his daily green habits.

1. Norm washes in warm (it's seldom he uses hot) water and hangs his wet clothes in his greenhouse. When he walks this walk, and avoids using his electric dryer, he cuts his electric by about 25%.

2. Norm also installed a sliding glass door into the greenhouse, which allows the house to heat naturally during much of the day. This really cuts down on using the furnace to heat his house.

3. Norm recycles. Like everything.

4. Norm drives used vehicles. A four banger, not a six or eight. (Here is his one indulgence. His car requires high octane juice.)

Norm wishes this could be a happier post, but unfortunately the crazy weather has taken a hit on the area. There is a large dam on an old road above Norm's house and it broke sometime today. It released thousands of gallons of water with such force, that a portion of the road was washed away, and part of Norm's land will also suffer erosion. There are also numerous washed out roads in the area. It's bound to also have some enviromental impact, and Norm's a bit bummed. Norm first noticed the high volume near him. Even after severe rain it's never this bad. Norm was quite nervous snapping this picture.

Looking out at the river, Norm could plainly see how unusual the flow pattern had become. That distant white horizontal line is a road. Wait a minute . . .

Then Norm realizes water is flowing over the road!!

Norm hikes around the property and up the road to find a big mess. The road is washed out, a section gone.

The water now flows over the road, not under it.. Norm still thinks it's still small potatoes compared to what happened in Virginia today.

Norm was recently faced with a rather steep tech problem. His beloved iBook's hardrive bit the dust. It wasn't a big surprise. This little machine was put through the paces. He even dropped it a couple of times. But now Norm had a situation. Ditch the laptop and buy a used one. Or rely on only one machine. Buying a new Macbook it simply a dream, and completely out of Norm's budget. Replacing the hardrive at the local (45 minutes away) shop would run around $250. At least.

And then Norm realized his other option. The option that always seems to be his only. Fix it himself. And he did it. It sucked. But he did it. And it sucked.

This is what greeted Norm this fine April morning. He has refused to shovel any of it. Although it doesn't seem to be melting very fast. Hmmmmm.

Big Buddy #2

If you go back to Norm's second post, you will see a picture of a Great Dane. He's been in love with Stinky for about a year now. It's a Brokeback Mountain love, as they're both males living in the great outdoors. Big Buddy just doesn't sit around and wait for Stinky to come out. Big Buddy now pushes open the door and comes in. And Big Buddy now comes with Little Buddy. Both from the same home. It's quite a sight to see these two outside running about, looking for Stinky. Norm did panic when Little Buddy showed Big Buddy how to get into the barn. That was interesting.

Now Norm is watching all of this from his computer. And Stinky is whining in the other room because he wants to go out, too. Unfortunately, that's good for about thirty seconds, and then Stinky becomes so overwhelmed he runs back to the safety of his bed. But none of these antics prepared Norm for Little Buddy's attempted conquest. And if you think the picture is funny, you should of seen the actual event. It's a torrid love triangle. And Little Buddy has made his move.

Well, Norm is going talk a little about the weather. It's been crazy this season. For the first half of the winter it was balmy. It freaked Norm out. We're talking no snow, no cold in December. During the first two weeks of January, Norm's lawn was still green. Then in mid-January a furious wind-storm hit New England, pulling all kinds of trees down with ice and rain. And then the ass-biting cold began. Norm's talking Canadian cold. Below freezing everyday with a wind chill. So it feels like 15 degrees below zero. The river is frozen all the way across. Norm would not be surprised if the ice is over a foot thick!! Of course Stinky has to head for the one part of the river that is not frozen!

Stinky, if you go in, you may not come out!!

Opps, my bad Norm. Let's go inside and you can give me more foods.

Norm is pretty sure this is one of the beavers that inhabit the local waters. There are otters, but they're slinky and long. Both types of creatures love to sit on the ice and eat!

Norm has been a bit slow on the upload lately, and he offers his sincerest apologies. Winter has hit New England with an ice storm last week. It had been a balmy season thus far, with temperatures well above freezing. But the weather changed and many poor plants have suffered. Norm has had several large tree limbs crash down on his property, with one in particular taking out two large ornamental plantings!! More photos coming. Here is a white lilac bush bent from the ice.

Boston #1

As some of you may know, Norm lived in Boston a number of years ago. And now that he has settled into this old shack, he doesn't find himself getting there to visit much anymore. However, Norm did manage a recent overnight, and enjoyed some balmy, unseasonal November weather. Here's the lobby of the Boston Park Plaza.

Norm has not been posting as much as desired based on his work load. Norm has a couple major home projects going on. The primary one involves building walls in the shed. This is all based on a new electrial panel being installed almost a year ago. Here is Norm's original 60A box. It is now just feeding the new 200A, until Norm can complete all the construction.

This shot was taken about a month ago.

Thanksgiving 2006

Well, pat Norm on the back! It was a success. They all arrived at Norm's pad around 1:30 and dinner was on by 2:30. A cancellation by an uncle and aunt actually made the seating feasible. Norm's mom came over the day before and helped clean. (Thanks mom!!) She also brought over the pictured turkey bag, which cuts down on cooking time and keeps all the natural juices in!! The bird was a 23 pounder, which left a small amount of leftovers. Norm was happy there was no fighting, yelling or bad behavior to report.

And Norm's brother pulled off his son's sweater at dinner to reveal a shirt that read, "I am going to be a big brother" which put everyone in a good mood. It took a few of the family members a minute or two to realize what it meant.

Okay, Norm has a quick, simple recipe. He has already done this a couple of times and it has been quite tasty. If you need something easy, this one can be ready in about an hour. And you can do variations, as far as the meat or veggies go, but Norm suggests you consider how hot your oven cooks and what meat you add to the mix. In this case, it was center-cut pork chops.

First, Norm adds about a cup of Italian salad dressing into his glass cooking pan. Norm usually adds a little olive oil, because he adds olive oil to everything. Lay the chops into the pan, but swish them, and flip them, so they get completely coated. Norm's big glass pan holds about four fat chops. (Note: The dressing should reach about halfway-up the side of the chops.)

Next, slice 2-3 baking potatoes. Cut them into ovals less than half an inch thick. This is the most difficult part of this recipe, so take your time. Lay them across the top of the chops like a blanket. Then sprinkle a cup of grated Parmesan over the entire thing and bake at 350 degrees for about an hour. (Norm suggests you keep close watch and don't let it burn.)

Norm says you can also dice a squash or tomato and add that on top, too!!
