Norm's World #5

Norm recently accomplished a massive brush burn-off on his side yard. This is a common, but highly-restrictive practice in most rural towns. One must get a permit, which can be a pain. And one must follow almost impossible rules of engagement. This side lot was for a number of years, the dumping zone for the massive amounts of tree branches, logs, clippings, etc. this place generates. Norm had kept adding to the pile over the years, knowing the day would come when he would have to burn the brush. Well that point has come and gone, and this photo shows the end flames of a 10-hour marathon. Stay tuned.

I'm just looking beyond the fire, and it looks so lush. I can't believe that's your backyard!

Permits can be a pain, but in my little town, in order to get one you have to go and talk to the cute firemen. So its not really such an inconvenience. :)

Ffleur, a tire would have put Norm in a bad position with the neighbors!!

Kookla, it lush beyond even my understanding. New England has now had over 20 inches of rain for two months!! Norm is freaked!!

LA, Norm did enjoy the cute fireperson. It was a woman volunteer at the town office and she was cute. Norm was actually happy when he saw her, because the earlier male volunteers had been difficult over the phone.

How do you keep things dry in that type of weather? What are the roofs made of that can withstand that beating? Don't you get roof rot? What about the foundation? Is everything brick?

I guess I watch alot of HGTV too!

Norm's house has an asphalt shingle roof, but when Norm cut an opening for a skylight, he found two alphalt layers, a metal layer, and the original wood shingle layer! Part laziness, part thrift, previous owners just kept adding on top of old roofing!!

The foundation is the original granite blocks. There are virtually no leaks anywhere.
