Norm's Feeling Green
In honor of Earth Day, Norm has compiled a list of his daily green habits.
1. Norm washes in warm (it's seldom he uses hot) water and hangs his wet clothes in his greenhouse. When he walks this walk, and avoids using his electric dryer, he cuts his electric by about 25%.
2. Norm also installed a sliding glass door into the greenhouse, which allows the house to heat naturally during much of the day. This really cuts down on using the furnace to heat his house.
3. Norm recycles. Like everything.
4. Norm drives used vehicles. A four banger, not a six or eight. (Here is his one indulgence. His car requires high octane juice.)
Norm asks, "How green are you?"

Norm shall not have his soul devoured and belched forth into the firey river of heads. He shall merely burn in the lake of entrails. It is much pleasenter there. So sayeth Prunella. Muyhahahahaha.
I wash my clothes in warm water and hang dry everything. Not being particularly green, just too poor to own a dryer. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
I also own a used car, again, poverty is the deciding factor.
Having a south-west top floor flat in an old house (heat rises) I rarely need to turn the heat on. In fact, usually I need a fan.
I recycle paper and glass products.
I take the bus to work.
I am wearing a green t-shirt at this very moment.
Yes, I am a greenite.
Norm thanks Pru.
(Ffleur you rule.) The dryer Norm has came with the shack. It works good when it is below freezing with no sunshine. Otherwise, Norm feels there is no need to run it.
Let's see:
I recycle.
I telecommute.
I drive a 4-cylinder car (next car is a hybrid).
One strike against me: If I had A/C, I'd run it.
For me - I telecommute part time, drive an older suv that gets pretty good gas mileage, but will go hybrid next time. I recycle. I have wall heaters that are pretty efficient in that you only heat up one room at a time. I buy organic produce and groceries from www.organicexpress.com, and i try to use natural pest control (lady bugs are a gardener's best friend), I buy recycled paper products . . . and I will make an effort to try to do more!
I have a little car (between compact and mid-size) that gets pretty good mileage. Plus, I only commute 25kms a day (round trip!)
We compost everything we can.
We recycle.
I hang my clothes outside in the warm weather, but like Norm, can't do anything about those bitter January days.
We have all energy efficient lightbulbs in our house. In fact, the Canadian government announced they will be phasing out ineffecient light bulbs:
"Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn announced that Ottawa will phase out inefficient incandescent bulbs by 2012. The ban is expected to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than six million tonnes a year and save homeowners about $60 annually in electricity costs. The federal government's move follows a similar ban by Ontario announced earlier in the month. The province said that replacing all the roughly 87 million incandescent bulbs in Ontario homes with compact fluorescents or other efficient lighting by 2012 could cut electricity demand by six million megawatt hours over the course of a year, enough to power 600,000 households."
I will be moving in September to a larger city which will mean public transportation and (possibly) no more car! Being stuck in Redneckville means public transportation is non-existant and everything is far away so a car is manditory.
Good post, Norm. We should all do more. Except Sheryl Crow. She wipes her bum with one square of toilet paper. I don't know if I'm as committed as she is to the cause...
mishy - I believe California is doing the same as Canada - getting rid of incandescents
Norm thinks car air conditioning is a city necessity, LA! (The new systems are enviromentally safe!)
Diane, the natural pest control impresses Norm! So many people around here pay to have chemicals spayed on their lawns. It's gross.
Norm thinks composting is hot, Mish. Well, at least warm, so it works. Will post pix of Norm's mega-post pie soon.
Great post Norm! And it's pretty cool to read how green everyone is. I'm trying to be more green too.
I recycle a good deal. My 12 year-old car gets solid mpg. And I'm going to invest in green energy companies (and I am invested in IFSIA a textile company that is very eco-friendly).
Unfortunately, I do use the dryer. Sorry folks ;(.
i ride my bike everywhere. i recycle just about everything from plastic, glass, aluminum to takeout containers, etc. i pick up any litter i see on the street. i always turn off the lights wherever i go and i bug the heck out of people to recycle and stuff.
ps you have some great posts!! the weather looks c-c-cold where you are!!
Norm would be forced to use his dryer more, if he didn't have his greenhouse, V!
Norm always appreciates a visit from Kitty!! Thanks for the kind words.
