Norm's World #17

Norm is pretty sure this is one of the beavers that inhabit the local waters. There are otters, but they're slinky and long. Both types of creatures love to sit on the ice and eat!

Awww, he's sweet! Did he not know you were there or is he just brazen?

Norm used a telephoto lens, LA. They always can tell you're there, and jump back-in right after the shot.

holy cold front! you're not kidding when you said it's cold. is that just ice or is it actual snow? what do the beavers eat if everything is frozen over? where do the fish go when the temperatures dip? is this going to last for long or is spring around the corner?

i know nothing about the wilderness!!

Norm thinks you might be pulling his leg, but he'll still answer. That is ice. The beavers dig stuff out of the bottom of the river. Norm believes most of the wiggly critters such as frogs, snakes, turtles, etc. bury themselves in the muddy bottom and sleep through the winter. Unless a beaver or otter find them and make them a meal.

Right now it's so cold, there is no open water, it is ice all the way across the pond. Norm expects winter until late March.

Great photo, Norm!!! I'm jealous you live near beavers and otters - even if it is cold as a witch's . . . well, you know what I mean!

Hey Diane, don't worry. Norm gets pretty jealous of you and LA. There is something to be said about no temps below freezing.

Ffleur, the nature shows where the critter gets away are the best. Norm is a total softie. Beavers also smack their tail against the water when they sense danger. It's a warning for the other beavers.

Thanks V! Norm actually just used his telephoto zoom on his camera. Poor choice of words.

Beavers are very cool from far away, but if you manage to get close to them (usually by accident on both yours and the animal's part) things can get vicious.

That looks like some cold water, there Norm.

i kid you not. i'm not a city girl, per se, but i know nothing about animals and nature and i don't know if i could handle a winter like you've been having. i have to know these details if i'm going to become a mountain woman.

Beautiful picture I don't think I would last two seconds out in that cold weather.

Norm has found kind words and perhaps a gentle smile calms the vicious beaver. Any additional tips, Mish?

PK, being a mountain woman has some perks. Norm will let you know when he thinks of one.

Pix, it's been tough for Norm. And he's a surly native.

When I encountered one, the beaver hissed at me, while I decided to use the tactic of shriking at the top of my lungs and running blindly through the woods. It worked out well in the end.
